BASIC MARKETING TOOL #1: BUSINESS CARDS

Whatever you do, do not wait to get your first cards. Do not wait until you design the perfect logo or choose an official business name. Do not wait until you have filed a fictitious business name, or have saved money for a formal photo shoot or graphic artist. This point became clear to me when I was consulting with a therapist who was looking for ways to build her practice. Since a business card is the primary marketing tool for massage therapists, I asked to see her card. Amazingly, she didn’t have one, and she had been in business for three years! When I asked her why she had no card, she told me she hadn’t had the inspiration yet for what to use as her logo. Please, don’t hold your practice up waiting for inspiration to design the perfect card. To get started, just have your first 100 cards made with your name, title, and telephone number, and get them into people’s hands. Do not make any excuses; just make cards and give them all away. Later, when your practice is under way, you can put more time, money, and understanding into creating a graphic representation of you and your work. And, whatever you do, don’t leave home without your business cards. Potential clients are everywhere!
